Many years ago I learned the game Saute from Joshua Cabral.* My students have always liked the game and today I was thinking about how to play it with beginning students who have limited vocabulary. Instead of using categories, you can try the same game with logical / illogical answers. And, this version has the kids talking more.
I haven’t played the game yet, but here is the description of the game if you want to try it out along with me:
The teacher stands in the middle of the circle. She points at a student and says a phrase. If the student says a logical response, the students on either side of the student being pointed at jump. If she says an illogical response the students on either side of the student being pointed at remain still. When students make a mistake or don’t jump soon enough they are out and sit down. Play continues until there are two students left.
In addition, I made slides that have some of the vocabulary that I would use to play the game. Let me know in the comments below if the game works for you and your students!
