Looking for authentic resources on Haïti that Novice learners can understand has been a pleasure. I have discovered art, music, stories and world heritage sites that I didn’t know about. It’s too bad that one of my students in French class had to ask me twice when I was going to teach about her mother’s homeland. I felt intimidated to teach about a country I know so little about, so I was not sure I could pull it off.
I read as much as I could and entered the different resources into this spreadsheet along with some notes and put it into a unit that is linked there too and then sought out people to ask for help. I found three educators who are Haitian to consult, our vice-principal, the liaison for our students who live in public housing and a teacher in a neighboring community. With their hints and suggestions, I have the confidence that I have a reasonable understanding of the country and its culture and am passing on the resources to you.
I hope that you will find some ideas from these resources and make them into your own unit. If you have students with Haitian background, they will appreciate your interest in their culture. And, all students will benefit from knowing our neighbor to the South.
