Each time I teach my students about the World Cup, I incorporate the new approach that I have learned at that time. This time around you will notice that I have added in new activities like Map Talk, the Marker game, circumlocution bingo, volleyball reading and Write and Discuss, which are all activities that I use in teaching through Comprehensible Input, CI.
I attempt in my teaching to find topics that will be of interest to students. Not all topics will excite every student, but the Men’s Soccer World Cup is about to happen in the US for the first time in 32 years and the excitement is ramping up. I hope that next week, which will be a particularly hot week in New England, I will be able to grab my students’ attention with lessons on the World Cup.
These lessons are scaffolded for Novice students. There is a lot of repetition of the vocabulary that I want to teach them. The unit is language-rich in that there is a lot of opportunities to hear the teacher speak in full sentences and paragraphs. And, there are games, videos and songs, in a further attempt to grab students’ interest.
Please find a set of slides with all the materials here.
