Music gets my students’ attention. Sometimes they enjoy the tune and other times they revel in critiquing it. With Novice students music videos can serve to observe the images and use French to comment on what they see or they can listen for words (as opposed to for meaning) in the song. Here are a few suggestions of songs that have worked with my Middle School students.
This video takes place in a school. This song might be too hard for my students to understand, but they can say their opinion about the video and say what they see. The viewer observes that the artist arrives at the school, says hello to classmates, talks with her friends and looks at her phone.

In a unit on after-school activities, students learn a lot of action words. Depicted in the video are many actions that correspond to high frequency vocabulary.
I put the adjectives from the song into a matching activity to do before listening to the song. Students use their knowledge of cognates and vocabulary from the unit to match the adjectives to their translation. With this activity they expanded their list of words to describe people so that when they did their final writing assessment they had more words to draw from.
